Cowboys Beginnings:
Colorado
Cowboys began as a mounted shooting group back in 1996. There were only 15
shooters to begin with. These cowboys and cowgirls met once a month at the
M Lazy C Ranch to race their horses around the arena and shoot balloon targets
staged on poles. In 1998 some action shooters learned of the match and
decided to approach the group to propose they combine forces and offer mounted
and action shooting at the ranch. Thus the action side of Colorado Cowboys
was born. By this point the mounted faction had grown to around 30 shooters. At
first the mounted and action shoots were held on the second Saturday and Sunday
of the month. It became too much work to do both shoots on the same
weekend, so the action shoot was moved to the Saturday before the mounted.
Although the mounted and action shooters don’t shoot together, there are
several of the mounted shooters that join in the monthly action match and a few
action shooters that join the mounted match.
Several
action shoots were held with only the ranch owner and his hands officiating.
There were very few props and a limited number of targets.
Luckily they had some very handy folks working the ranch that also knew
how to weld. Shortly there were
more targets.
Soon,
it became apparent that running a ranch, a cowboy action and mounted group was
going to take more help. An
advisory board was developed from some of the interested shooters and things
began to change. Along with the
ranch hands, this group of hardy shooters began building props and finding an
outlet for more targets. There were
work parties that the membership joined in to enhance the existing range.
More buildings were erected and berm work done.
At that time, an average number of participants for an action shoot
numbered about 30. Colorado Cowboys
action shooters made a decision to shoot year round.
Everyone soon figured out that although the shoot was being held in the
heart of the Rocky Mountains, the weather was nice even in the dead of winter.
More and more folks began to show up.
Within a year the attendance was up to 70 cowpokes with membership around
65. We are continuing to grow and
learn!
You
may have noticed there are no names in our story.
The reason for this is because no one person can make a club, it takes
teamwork.
We
are fortunate to have our shooting range on a working cowboy ranch in the
Colorado Mountains, and feel certain your weekend here will be a memorable one.
